What is embroidery stabilizer?
Embroidery stabilizer is a backing material that supports fabric while it is being stitched. It keeps the fabric from stretching, shifting or puckering under the needle.
It is hooped with the fabric or placed underneath it. After stitching, the extra is cut, torn or washed away, depending on the type.
The main types are:
• Cut-away. Stays in the garment permanently. Use it for stretchy fabrics such as T-shirts and sweatshirts.
• Tear-away. Tears off after stitching. Use it for stable woven fabrics such as cotton and denim.
• Wash-away. Dissolves in water. Use it for free standing lace and for sheer fabrics.
• Topping. A thin film placed on top of the fabric. Use it on towels and fleece so stitches don't sink into the pile.
A simple rule: if the fabric stretches, use cut-away. If it doesn't, tear-away is usually enough.
