Do I need embroidery software to use a design I bought?

No, you usually do not need embroidery software to use a purchased embroidery design. If the design is already provided in the correct format and size for your embroidery machine, you can usually transfer it directly to your machine and stitch it.

When You Do Not Need Software

If you download the correct file format for your machine and the design fits your hoop, you can normally copy the file to a compatible USB drive or transfer it using your machine's supported method.

When Software Can Help

Embroidery software is useful if you need to change the file format, resize the design, combine designs, change colors, edit the design, or make other adjustments before stitching.

Check the File Format

Before downloading, make sure you choose the format your machine supports. For example, Brother machines commonly use PES, while Janome machines commonly use JEF. Using the correct format can eliminate the need for conversion software.

Check the Design Size

The design also needs to fit within your machine's embroidery area and selected hoop. A design can have the correct file format but still be too large for your machine.

When You May Want Software

If you regularly download embroidery designs, software can be helpful for viewing, organizing, converting, resizing, or making minor edits. However, it is not required simply to stitch a correctly formatted design.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Check your machine's supported file format.
  • Download the correct format.
  • Make sure the design fits your hoop.
  • Transfer the file using your machine's supported method.
  • Use embroidery software only when you need to edit or convert the design.

Best Tip

If you buy a design that is already available in your machine's correct format and size, you can usually stitch it without embroidery software. Software is mainly needed when you want to modify or convert the design.
