How do I change an embroidery design from one format to another?

The easiest way to change an embroidery design from one format to another is to use embroidery software that supports both the original file format and the format your machine needs.

Use Embroidery Software

Open the original embroidery file in compatible embroidery software, then use the software's Save As or Export option to select the format your machine requires, such as PES, JEF, DST, HUS, or another supported format.

Choose the Correct Format for Your Machine

Before converting the file, check your embroidery machine's manual or specifications. For example, Brother machines commonly use PES, while Janome machines commonly use JEF.

Check the Design After Conversion

Converting a file can sometimes change stitch information, thread colors, or other design details. Open the converted file in your software and check the design size, stitch count, colors, and overall appearance before transferring it to your machine.

Avoid Unnecessary Conversions

If the design is already available in the format your machine uses, download that version instead of converting another format. The original machine-specific file is usually the better choice.

Be Careful With Free Online Converters

Some online tools can convert embroidery files, but results can vary. A conversion may not preserve the design exactly, especially with detailed or complicated embroidery designs. Use a trusted embroidery program whenever possible.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Check which format your machine supports.
  • Open the original file in compatible embroidery software.
  • Export or save it in the correct machine format.
  • Check the design size and stitch count.
  • Review thread colors and design details.
  • Test the converted file before using it on an important project.

Best Tip

Whenever possible, use the original file created for your embroidery machine instead of converting it. This helps avoid changes to stitches, density, colors, and design details that can sometimes happen during conversion.
