How do I choose the right embroidery design size?

Choose an embroidery design size that fits your hoop and looks appropriate for the item you are decorating. The right size depends on your machine's embroidery area, the available space on your project, and the look you want.

Check Your Hoop Size

Start by checking your machine's maximum embroidery area. The design must fit within the actual stitching area of your hoop, not just the physical size of the hoop itself.

Measure Your Project

Consider the space where you want to place the design. A size that works well on the front of an adult shirt may be too large for a baby garment, pocket, towel, or small item.

Consider the Design Details

Very small designs may not show fine details as clearly, while making a design much larger can affect the way the stitches work together. Choose a size that preserves the design's intended appearance.

Think About the Fabric

Lightweight or stretchy fabrics may work better with appropriately sized designs that do not place excessive stitching in a small area. Larger designs can also require more stabilization and support.

Quick Checklist

  • Hoop: Make sure the design fits your machine's embroidery area.
  • Project: Measure the available space on the item.
  • Detail: Avoid making detailed designs unnecessarily small.
  • Fabric: Consider how the size and amount of stitching will affect the material.

Best tip: Before stitching, compare the design's exact width and height with the available space on your project. This simple check can prevent a design from being too large, too small, or poorly positioned.
