How Do I Know If an Embroidery Design Will Fit My Hoop?

The easiest way to know if an embroidery design will fit your hoop is to compare the design's width and height with the actual embroidery area of your hoop.

Check the Design Dimensions

Look at the design's listed size before downloading or stitching it. For example, a design may be listed as 3.8 x 3.8 inches or 5 x 6.8 inches.

Check Your Hoop's Embroidery Area

The size printed on a hoop does not always represent the exact area your machine can stitch. Check your machine's manual for the maximum embroidery area of the specific hoop.

Make Sure Both Measurements Fit

The design must fit in both width and height. A design that is 5 inches wide will not fit a hoop with a 4-inch maximum embroidery width, even if the design is less than 7 inches tall.

Leave Some Clearance

It is best not to choose a design that is exactly the maximum size of your embroidery area. Leaving a small amount of clearance can help prevent problems with hoop placement and stitching.

Do Not Rely Only on the Hoop Name

A hoop labeled 5x7 does not necessarily provide a full 5x7 inches of usable embroidery space. Always check your machine's actual sewing area.

Quick Checklist

  • Find the design's exact width and height.
  • Check your hoop's actual embroidery area.
  • Compare both the width and height.
  • Make sure the design is not larger than either measurement.
  • Leave some clearance when possible.

Best Tip

Always compare the design dimensions with your machine's actual embroidery area, rather than assuming the hoop's name is the exact stitching size. This is the easiest way to avoid buying or downloading a design that will not fit.
