How do I know which thread weight to use for embroidery?

For most machine embroidery designs, 40-weight embroidery thread is the standard choice and works well for most projects.

40-Weight Thread

40-weight thread is the most common choice for machine embroidery. It provides good coverage and detail and works well for most designs, fabrics, and embroidery machines.

30-Weight Thread

30-weight thread is thicker than 40-weight thread and creates bolder, heavier-looking stitches. It can be useful when you want more visible coverage or a stronger decorative effect.

60-Weight Thread

60-weight thread is finer than 40-weight thread and can be useful for small lettering, delicate details, and designs where you want less thread coverage.

What About the Design?

The design itself is important when choosing thread weight. A design digitized for standard 40-weight thread will generally give the best results when stitched with that weight. Changing thread weight can affect coverage, stitch appearance, and the overall look of the design.

Consider the Fabric

Lightweight fabrics may look better with finer thread, while heavier fabrics can often handle thicker thread. Always consider the fabric and the amount of detail in the design.

Quick Checklist

  • Most machine embroidery: 40-weight
  • Bolder stitches: 30-weight
  • Fine details: 60-weight
  • Best starting point: Use the thread weight recommended for the design.

Best Tip

If you are unsure, start with quality 40-weight machine embroidery thread. It is the most versatile choice for standard embroidery designs.
