How do I remove embroidery from fabric?

You can remove machine embroidery from fabric by carefully cutting the stitches from the back of the fabric and pulling them out without cutting the fabric itself.

Turn the Fabric Inside Out

Work from the back of the fabric whenever possible. This makes it easier to see and cut the bobbin stitches that hold the embroidery together.

Use an Embroidery Seam Ripper

A small embroidery scissors or stitch remover can help cut the stitches. Work slowly and remove a few stitches at a time rather than trying to pull out the entire design at once.

Remove the Stitches

After cutting the stitches, turn the fabric over and gently pull the loosened threads from the front. Tweezers can help remove small pieces of thread that remain.

Protect the Fabric

Be especially careful with lightweight, stretchy, or delicate fabrics. Cutting too deeply can damage the fabric, and removing dense embroidery may leave permanent needle holes or marks.

Clean Up the Area

Once the embroidery is removed, gently brush or wash the fabric according to its care instructions. Some fabrics may continue to show the outline of the original embroidery.

Best Tip

Take your time and avoid pulling hard on the stitches. If the embroidery is very dense or the fabric is delicate, removing the design may cause more damage than leaving it in place.
