What does embroidery design width and height mean?

Embroidery design width and height tell you the actual size of the design when it is stitched onto your fabric. Width measures the design from left to right, while height measures it from top to bottom.

What Does Width Mean?

Width is the horizontal measurement of the embroidery design, from its leftmost point to its rightmost point.

What Does Height Mean?

Height is the vertical measurement, from the highest point of the design to the lowest point.

For Example

If a design is listed as 4" × 3", it is approximately 4 inches wide and 3 inches tall when stitched out.

Why Do Width and Height Matter?

These measurements help you determine whether a design will fit your embroidery hoop and whether it is the right size for your project. A design can fit within one hoop dimension but still be too large in the other direction.

Do Width and Height Change With Different Sizes?

Yes. The same embroidery design may be available in several sizes. As the design gets larger or smaller, both its width and height will change.

Quick Checklist

  • Width: Left to right.
  • Height: Top to bottom.
  • Design size: Width and height together show the overall stitched dimensions.
  • Before stitching: Make sure both measurements fit within your hoop's embroidery area.

Best tip: Always check both the width and height of an embroidery design before stitching. Knowing one measurement alone does not tell you whether the entire design will fit your hoop.
