What Is JEF Format in Machine Embroidery?
JEF format in machine embroidery is the file type that Janome embroidery machines read. A JEF file ends in .jef and tells the machine exactly where to place each stitch.
JEF files are also used by Elna machines and by Kenmore embroidery machines, which were built by Janome.
A JEF file is a set of instructions, not a picture. It holds:
- the position of every stitch
- where the machine should jump, trim and stop
- the order of the thread colors
- the hoop the design was made for
Because a JEF file records a hoop size, a Janome machine may not show a design saved for a hoop it doesn't have. If a JEF design won't load, check that you picked the size that fits your hoop.
Janome machines also look for designs in a specific folder on the USB drive. Formatting the USB drive in your machine creates that folder for you, and your manual shows where to copy the files.
JEF is one of several machine embroidery formats. Each machine brand reads its own, such as PES for Brother and Baby Lock and VP3 for Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff. Most embroidery designs are sold with several formats in one download, so you pick the file that matches your machine.
