What is the difference between an embroidery design and an embroidery pattern?
The main difference is that a machine embroidery design is a digital stitch file for an embroidery machine, while an embroidery pattern usually provides instructions or artwork that you follow manually.
Machine Embroidery Design
A machine embroidery design is a digitized file containing the stitches and instructions your embroidery machine needs to create the design. Common machine embroidery formats include PES, JEF, DST, EXP, HUS, PEC, VIP, VP3, and XXX.
Embroidery Pattern
An embroidery pattern can refer to a drawing, template, or set of instructions showing you how to create an embroidery design by hand. It may include outlines, stitch suggestions, thread colors, and other instructions, but it is not necessarily a file your embroidery machine can read.
Can You Use an Embroidery Pattern in a Machine?
Not directly. A picture, PDF, or traditional embroidery pattern must be digitized into a machine embroidery file before an embroidery machine can stitch it.
Which One Do You Need?
If you are using an embroidery machine, you need a machine embroidery design in a file format your machine supports. If you are doing hand embroidery, an embroidery pattern with the appropriate instructions may be what you need.
Quick Comparison
- Machine embroidery design: Digital stitch file used by an embroidery machine.
- Embroidery pattern: Artwork or instructions used as a guide for creating embroidery.
- Machine design: Can be loaded directly into a compatible embroidery machine.
- Pattern: Usually requires you to follow the instructions and create the stitches yourself.
Best Tip
If you are buying designs for a machine embroidery project, look for a digitized machine embroidery file in the format your machine supports. A regular image or hand embroidery pattern cannot normally be loaded directly into your machine.
