What should I look for in an embroidery design before buying it?
Before buying an embroidery design, check that it is compatible with your machine, fits your hoop, and is suitable for the project and fabric you plan to use. A few simple checks can help you avoid buying a design that does not work for your needs.
Check the Embroidery Format
Make sure the design is available in a format your machine can read, such as PES, JEF, DST, EXP, HUS, PEC, VIP, VP3, or XXX.
Check the Design Size
Look at the design's exact width and height and compare them with your machine's embroidery area. Make sure the design will fit your hoop without needing to resize it.
Look at Stitch-Out Photos
Actual stitch-out photos can give you a better idea of how the design looks when embroidered. Look for clean edges, good coverage, and details that are clearly visible.
Check the Stitch Count
Stitch count can give you an idea of how much stitching is involved and how long the design may take. However, a higher stitch count does not automatically mean better quality.
Check the Thread Colors
Look at the number of thread colors and the color chart, especially if you want to use specific colors or substitute your own thread brand.
Consider Your Project
Make sure the design is appropriate for the item and fabric you plan to embroider. A detailed design may work beautifully on one project but not be ideal for lightweight or stretchy fabric.
Quick Checklist
- Format: Does your machine support the file?
- Size: Will it fit your hoop?
- Stitch-out: Does the finished embroidery look clean?
- Stitch count: Is the amount of stitching appropriate for your project?
- Colors: Are the thread colors suitable for your project?
- Fabric: Is the design appropriate for the material?
Best tip: Don't buy based on the picture alone. Check the format, size, stitch-out examples, and design information first so you know exactly what you are getting.
