Why are my stitches loose?
The most common reasons embroidery stitches are loose are incorrect thread tension, improper threading, a problem with the bobbin, or loose hooping. Here’s how to fix each one:
Upper thread tension is too loose
If the upper thread is not tight enough, stitches can appear loose or form loops. Increase the upper thread tension slightly and test the embroidery again.
Machine is threaded incorrectly
Re-thread the machine carefully, making sure the thread passes through every guide and the tension discs correctly. Missing even one thread guide can affect stitch tension.
Bobbin is inserted incorrectly
Make sure the bobbin is installed in the correct direction and that the thread is properly seated in the bobbin tension area.
Bobbin tension needs attention
If the bobbin tension is incorrect, the upper and bobbin threads may not balance properly. Check your machine's recommended bobbin setup before making adjustments.
Fabric is loose in the hoop
Make sure the fabric and stabilizer are securely hooped and cannot move while stitching. Do not stretch the fabric excessively when hooping.
Needle problem
A dull, bent, or incorrect needle can prevent stitches from forming properly. Replace it with a sharp embroidery needle appropriate for your fabric.
Thread is not feeding smoothly
Check the thread path and make sure the spool is feeding freely. Thread that catches or tangles can create inconsistent tension and loose stitches.
Design or stitch density
If loose stitches appear only in certain areas of the design, the design itself may have a digitizing or stitch-density issue.
Best tip: Start by re-threading the
