Why are my stitches too tight?
The most common reasons embroidery stitches are too tight are upper-thread tension that is too high, incorrect threading, insufficient stabilization, or a design with very dense stitching. Here’s how to fix each one:
Upper-thread tension is too tight
If the upper thread tension is too high, it can pull the fabric and make the stitches look tight or cause puckering. Lower the tension slightly and test the design again.
Machine is threaded incorrectly
Re-thread the machine carefully, making sure the thread passes through every guide and tension area correctly. Incorrect threading can create extra tension even when your machine settings are correct.
Not enough stabilizer
If the fabric does not have enough support, dense stitches can pull it together and make the embroidery appear overly tight. Use a stabilizer appropriate for your fabric and design.
Design is too dense
A design with too many stitches concentrated in a small area can create excessive tension on the fabric. Use the design at its recommended size and avoid enlarging or compressing it significantly.
Fabric is too lightweight or stretchy
Thin and stretchy fabrics are more easily pulled by dense embroidery. Use appropriate stabilization and test the design before stitching your final project.
