Why are there spaces between my embroidery stitches?
The most common reasons there are spaces between embroidery stitches are fabric movement, low stitch density, incorrect thread tension, resizing the design, or a problem with the embroidery file.
The Design Has Low Stitch Density
Some designs are intentionally digitized with fewer stitches, which can leave small spaces between stitches. This may be normal, especially in larger fill areas or designs with a lighter, more open look.
The Fabric Is Moving
If your fabric shifts while the machine is stitching, the stitches may not land exactly where they should. This can create unexpected gaps in the embroidery.
The Design Was Resized
Making an embroidery design much larger can spread the stitches farther apart and create spaces that were not present at the original size. Significant resizing can change how the design stitches out.
Thread Tension Is Incorrect
If the thread tension is not correct, stitches may not lay properly against each other. Check both the upper thread and bobbin if you notice gaps throughout the design.
The Fabric Needs More Stabilizer
Fabric that is not properly supported can stretch or move during stitching. Using the appropriate stabilizer can help keep the fabric stable and allow the stitches to land where they should.
The Needle or Thread Is Causing Problems
A damaged needle or thread that is not feeding properly can cause stitches to form incorrectly. Try replacing the needle and make sure the thread is moving smoothly through the machine.
The Design File May Have a Problem
If the exact same spaces appear in the same places every time, the design itself may have been digitized that way or there may be an issue with the file.
Best Tip
If the spaces are part of the design and appear in the same places every time, they may be intentional. If unexpected gaps appear randomly, check your hooping, stabilizer, needle, thread tension, and thread path first.
