Why can I see the fabric underneath my applique stitches?
The most common reasons you can see fabric underneath appliqué stitches are low stitch density, incorrect thread tension, fabric shifting, an appliqué piece that is too small, or the finishing stitches not providing enough coverage.
Stitch Density Is Too Low
If the finishing stitches are spaced too far apart, the base fabric or edge of the appliqué can show through. The stitches need to provide enough coverage to hide the underlying fabric.
Appliqué Fabric Is Too Small
If the appliqué piece does not extend far enough beyond the tack-down area, the finishing stitches may not completely cover the edge. Use a slightly larger piece of fabric and trim it after the tack-down stitches when appropriate.
Fabric Shifted
If the appliqué or base fabric moves during stitching, the finishing stitches can end up away from the edge of the fabric. Proper hooping and stabilization help keep everything aligned.
Thread Tension Is Incorrect
Incorrect tension can pull the finishing stitches toward one side and reduce coverage. Check the upper thread and bobbin threading and make sure the tension is appropriate for your machine.
Design Was Resized
Significant resizing can change stitch spacing and density. Making an appliqué design smaller may cause the finishing stitches to become too crowded, while enlarging it can create more space between stitches.
Thread Color
If the thread color is very different from the appliqué fabric, small areas of the underlying material may be more noticeable. Following the recommended thread colors can help create a cleaner finished appearance.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Check the stitch density and coverage.
- Use an appliqué piece large enough to cover the area.
- Keep the fabric flat and secure.
- Use proper stabilization.
- Check upper thread and bobbin tension.
- Avoid significant resizing of appliqué designs.
- Choose a thread color that works well with the appliqué fabric.
Best Tip
Make sure the appliqué fabric extends beyond the tack-down area and that the final stitching completely covers its raw edge. Proper stabilization and careful fabric placement will also help prevent the underlying fabric from showing.
