Why does my applique have gaps?
The most common reasons an appliqué has gaps are fabric shifting, incorrect placement, low stitch density, improper thread tension, or the finishing stitches not fully covering the appliqué edge.
Appliqué Fabric Shifted
If the appliqué fabric moves during stitching, the finishing stitches may no longer line up with the edge of the fabric. Make sure the fabric is flat and securely held in place.
Fabric Was Placed Incorrectly
The appliqué fabric should extend beyond the entire tack-down area. If it is positioned too close to the edge, the finishing stitches may leave exposed areas.
Stitch Density Is Too Low
If the finishing stitches are too widely spaced, they may not provide complete coverage around the appliqué. This can leave small gaps where the base fabric or appliqué edge is visible.
Thread Tension
Incorrect tension can cause stitches to pull away from the edge or create uneven coverage. Check that the upper thread and bobbin are threaded correctly and that the tension is appropriate for your machine.
Fabric Movement
If the base fabric moves in the hoop, the appliqué and finishing stitches can become misaligned. Proper hooping and stabilization help keep everything in position.
Design Was Resized
Significant resizing can change the spacing and density of the stitches. This may cause the finishing stitches to spread apart or no longer cover the appliqué properly.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Keep the appliqué fabric flat and secure.
- Make sure the fabric extends beyond the tack-down area.
- Use the correct stabilizer.
- Check thread tension and threading.
- Make sure the base fabric does not move in the hoop.
- Avoid significantly resizing appliqué designs.
Best Tip
When placing appliqué fabric, use a piece that is slightly larger than the area you need to cover. This gives you enough room for the finishing stitches to completely cover the edge and helps prevent gaps.
