Why does my embroidery machine say the design cannot be used?

The most common reasons an embroidery machine says a design cannot be used are an unsupported file format, a design that is too large, an incompatible hoop, a damaged file, or a design that is not compatible with your machine.

Wrong File Format

Your machine may not support the embroidery format you are trying to open. Check your exact machine model to see which file formats it accepts.

The Design Is Too Large

A design may be in the correct format but still be too large for your machine. Check the design's width and height and compare them with your machine's maximum embroidery area.

Wrong Hoop Selected

If the design is larger than the hoop selected on your machine, the machine may prevent you from using it. Select a hoop that is large enough for the design if your machine supports one.

The File Is Damaged

A damaged or incomplete file may not load correctly. If you downloaded the design from a ZIP folder, try extracting it again or downloading a fresh copy.

The Design Was Converted

If the design was converted from one embroidery format to another, the conversion may have changed information that your machine needs to read the design correctly.

The Machine Has Design Limitations

Some machines have limits on design size, stitch count, number of colors, or other embroidery data. Check your owner's manual for the specific limitations of your model.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Confirm the file format is supported by your machine.
  • Check the design dimensions.
  • Select the correct hoop size.
  • Make sure the file is not damaged.
  • Try the original file instead of a converted version.
  • Check your machine's design limitations.

Best Tip

When your machine says a design cannot be used, first check the file format, design size, and selected hoop. These are the most common compatibility problems.
