Why does my embroidery machine use the wrong thread color?
The most common reasons embroidery colors look wrong are different thread brands, incorrect thread color settings, a color chart mismatch, or the embroidery machine interpreting the file's color information differently.
The Thread Brand Is Different
Embroidery files contain color information, but the actual thread color depends on the brand you use. A red in the design may look different when stitched with Robison-Anton, Madeira, Sulky, Isacord, or another thread brand.
Check the Color Chart
Always check the color chart included with your embroidery design. It shows the recommended thread colors and helps you match the design more accurately.
Your Machine Uses Different Color Numbers
Different embroidery machines and software programs may use their own thread libraries and color numbers. The same color number does not always represent the exact same thread color.
The File Was Converted
Converting an embroidery file from one format to another can change the color information or how colors are displayed. The stitches may still be correct even if the colors shown on the machine are different.
The Machine Display Is Not Exact
The colors shown on an embroidery machine screen or in embroidery software are only a preview. Screen settings and software color libraries can make thread colors appear different from the finished stitch-out.
Colors Were Changed in Software
If the design was opened or edited in embroidery software, check that the original thread colors were not automatically changed to a different thread palette.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Check the color chart included with the design.
- Make sure you are using the recommended thread brand or a close equivalent.
- Check the thread palette selected in your embroidery software.
- Be aware that machine screen colors are only a preview.
- Check whether the file was converted before stitching.
- Compare the actual thread colors rather than relying only on the screen.
Best Tip
For the most accurate results, follow the color chart included with the embroidery design and match the recommended thread colors as closely as possible. Small differences in thread brands and screens are normal.
