Why does my embroidery thread keep knotting?

The most common reasons embroidery thread keeps knotting are incorrect threading, tension problems, bobbin issues, a damaged needle, or thread that is catching as it feeds through the machine.

Incorrect threading
If the upper thread is not properly seated in the tension discs and thread guides, it can form loops and knots. Remove the thread completely and rethread the machine carefully.

Thread tension is too loose
When the upper thread tension is too loose, excess thread can form loops and knots, especially underneath the fabric. Check the tension and make a small adjustment while testing on scrap fabric.

Bobbin problems
A poorly wound or incorrectly inserted bobbin can cause knots underneath the embroidery. Remove the bobbin, make sure it is wound evenly, and reinstall it correctly.

Thread is catching
Check the entire thread path for anything that could catch the thread, including the spool, thread guides, and tension area. The thread should feed smoothly without snagging.

Needle problems
A bent, dull, or incorrect needle can prevent the thread from forming stitches properly and cause knotting. Replace the needle with a new embroidery needle appropriate for your fabric and thread.

Fabric is moving
If the fabric or stabilizer moves during stitching, the thread can become loose and form knots. Make sure both are securely hooped and properly supported.

Thread is old or damaged
Old, brittle, or damaged embroidery thread may knot or break more easily. Try a fresh spool of quality embroidery thread.

Design is too dense
Very dense embroidery creates additional friction and can contribute to thread problems. If the knotting always happens in the same heavily stitched area, the design density may be a factor.

Best tip: Stop the machine and completely rethread the upper thread and bobbin first. If the problem continues, replace the needle and check the thread tension before stitching again.
