Why does my embroidery thread keep tangling?
The most common reasons embroidery thread keeps tangling are incorrect threading, thread tension problems, a poorly wound bobbin, loose hooping, or the thread catching somewhere along its path.
Incorrect threading
If the upper thread is not seated correctly in every guide or tension disc, it can loop and tangle while stitching. Completely remove the thread and rethread the machine with the presser foot raised if your machine requires it.
Thread tension is too loose
Loose upper-thread tension can allow extra thread to form loops and knots. Check the tension setting and make a small adjustment while testing on scrap fabric.
Bobbin problems
A poorly wound bobbin, incorrectly inserted bobbin, or bobbin that is not feeding smoothly can cause tangling underneath the fabric. Remove the bobbin, check that it is wound evenly, and reinstall it according to your machine's instructions.
Thread is catching
Check the thread path for anything that could catch the thread, including rough edges, guides, the spool, or the thread stand. Make sure the spool feeds smoothly without snagging.
Loose hooping or fabric movement
If the fabric or stabilizer moves during embroidery, the thread can become loose and tangle. Make sure the fabric and stabilizer are securely hooped and properly supported.
Needle problems
A bent, damaged, or incorrect needle can prevent the thread from forming stitches correctly and may lead to tangling. Replace the needle with a new embroidery needle appropriate for your fabric and thread.
Design is too dense
Very dense embroidery creates more friction and can contribute to thread tangling, especially in heavily stitched areas. If tangling happens repeatedly in the same part of the design, the design density may be a factor.
Best tip: Stop the machine and completely rethread the upper thread and bobbin first. Then replace the needle and test the design on a scrap piece of the same fabric before continuing.
