Why does my fabric move while embroidering?

The most common reasons fabric moves while embroidering are loose hooping, insufficient stabilizer, stretchy or slippery fabric, an improperly attached hoop, or fabric that is not supported well enough for the design.

Fabric is not hooped tightly enough
If the fabric can move inside the hoop, the embroidery stitches may pull it in different directions. Make sure the fabric and stabilizer are secure and smooth in the hoop without stretching the fabric excessively.

Not enough stabilizer
Stabilizer provides support and helps prevent the fabric from shifting or stretching under the embroidery. Lightweight, stretchy, or loosely woven fabrics often need additional stabilization.

Fabric is stretchy or slippery
Knits, jersey, satin, and other slippery or stretchy fabrics can move more easily during embroidery. Use a stabilizer appropriate for the fabric and avoid stretching the material while hooping.

Hoop is not tightened properly
Check that the inner and outer hoop are securely tightened around the fabric and stabilizer. If the fabric can slide between the hoops, it can move during stitching.

Hoop is not attached securely
The hoop should be firmly locked into the embroidery machine. If it is loose, the hoop itself can move while the machine is stitching.

Design is too dense
Heavy embroidery can pull on the fabric and cause it to shift or distort. If movement is worse in heavily stitched areas, the design may need additional stabilization or may be too dense for the fabric.

Fabric is being stretched during hooping
Do not pull the fabric tightly in an attempt to make it smooth. Fabric that is stretched in the hoop can relax after stitching and cause distortion or movement. Keep it smooth and supported instead.

Best tip: Before stitching, gently check whether the fabric can move inside the hoop. If it does, improve the hooping and stabilization before starting. Always test on a scrap piece of the same fabric when working with a new material.
