Why is my applique fabric not covering the stitches?
The most common reasons appliqué fabric is not covering the stitches are incorrect fabric placement, fabric shifting, a tack-down stitch problem, or the appliqué piece being cut too small.
Appliqué Fabric Was Cut Too Small
The appliqué fabric needs to be large enough to completely cover the area outlined by the design. If it is cut too close to the edge, parts of the tack-down stitches may remain visible.
Fabric Shifted During Stitching
If the appliqué piece moves after it is placed, the final border may stitch outside the fabric. Make sure the fabric is flat and securely held in position.
Fabric Was Not Positioned Correctly
Place the appliqué fabric over the tack-down area with enough coverage around all edges. It should extend beyond the area that will be covered by the final satin or border stitches.
Tack-Down Stitches Are Not Correct
The tack-down stitches hold the appliqué fabric in place. If they are missing, skipped, or not stitching in the expected location, the appliqué may not be properly secured or covered.
Design Was Resized
Significant resizing can change the relationship between the tack-down and finishing stitches. This can cause the border to move closer to the edge of the appliqué fabric or even stitch outside it.
Fabric Is Stretching
Stretchy or lightweight appliqué fabric can move or stretch during stitching. Use suitable stabilization and keep the fabric flat while the design is being stitched.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Make sure the appliqué fabric is large enough.
- Place the fabric over the entire tack-down area.
- Keep the appliqué fabric flat and secure.
- Check that the tack-down stitches are stitching correctly.
- Avoid significant resizing of appliqué designs.
- Use appropriate stabilization for stretchy or lightweight fabric.
Best Tip
When placing appliqué fabric, give yourself plenty of extra coverage around the tack-down area. It is much better to use a slightly larger piece and trim it after the tack-down stitches than to cut the fabric too small.
