Why is my applique fabric shifting?
The most common reasons appliqué fabric shifts during embroidery are insufficient stabilization, fabric not being secured properly, loose hooping, or the appliqué fabric moving before the tack-down stitches are sewn.
Appliqué Fabric Was Not Secured
If the appliqué fabric is simply placed on top of the base fabric, it can move as the hoop travels. Use the recommended appliqué method and make sure the fabric is secured before the tack-down and satin stitches.
Not Enough Stabilizer
Stabilizer supports the fabric while the design stitches. If the stabilizer is too weak or not appropriate for the fabric, the appliqué area can move or distort.
Fabric Is Not Hooped Properly
The base fabric should be smooth and secure in the hoop. Loose fabric can move during stitching and cause the appliqué piece to shift with it.
Appliqué Fabric Is Too Slippery
Satin, lightweight fabric, and other slippery materials can move more easily during embroidery. Temporary adhesive or another suitable method can help keep the appliqué fabric in place.
Tack-Down Stitching
The tack-down stitches are designed to hold the appliqué fabric in position before the final border stitching. If the fabric moves before or during this step, the finished edge may not line up correctly.
Machine Speed
Stitching at a very high speed can make lightweight or slippery appliqué fabric move more easily. Slowing the machine down can help improve control.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Use the correct stabilizer for the base fabric.
- Hoop the base fabric firmly and evenly.
- Keep the appliqué fabric flat and secure.
- Use temporary adhesive when appropriate.
- Make sure the tack-down stitches are holding the fabric.
- Slow the machine down if the fabric continues to move.
Best Tip
Keep the appliqué fabric flat and securely in place before the tack-down stitches begin. Proper stabilization and careful hooping are the best ways to prevent appliqué fabric from shifting.
