Why is my applique not lining up?
The most common reasons an appliqué design is not lining up are fabric movement, inaccurate fabric placement, improper hooping, incorrect stabilization, or significant resizing of the design.
Appliqué Fabric Shifted
If the appliqué fabric moves after the placement or tack-down stitches, the final border may no longer line up with the fabric edge. Keep the fabric flat and securely in place.
Fabric Was Placed Incorrectly
The appliqué fabric needs to completely cover the placement and tack-down area. If it is positioned too far in one direction, the finishing stitches may miss the edge.
Base Fabric Moved
If the fabric shifts inside the hoop, every part of the design can become misaligned. Make sure the fabric is hooped smoothly and supported with the appropriate stabilizer.
Hooping Problems
Loose or uneven hooping can cause the fabric to move as the machine stitches. Avoid stretching the fabric excessively while hooping, as it can change its shape after stitching.
Design Was Resized
Significant resizing can change the relationship between placement, tack-down, and finishing stitches. This can make an appliqué design appear misaligned even when the machine is stitching correctly.
Stabilizer Is Not Providing Enough Support
If the stabilizer is too light or unsuitable for the fabric, movement can occur during stitching. Use stabilization appropriate for both the fabric and the design.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Keep the appliqué fabric flat and securely positioned.
- Make sure the appliqué fabric covers the entire placement area.
- Hoop the base fabric smoothly and evenly.
- Use the correct stabilizer.
- Check that the hoop is properly attached to the machine.
- Avoid significantly resizing appliqué designs.
Best Tip
For accurate appliqué placement, keep the base fabric completely stable and use an appliqué piece that is larger than the placement area. Secure the fabric before the tack-down stitches and avoid stretching it while hooping.
