Why is my bobbin thread tangled?
The most common reasons bobbin thread gets tangled are an incorrectly inserted bobbin, poorly wound bobbin, incorrect upper threading, incorrect thread tension, or lint and thread buildup around the bobbin area.
Bobbin is inserted incorrectly
If the bobbin is installed in the wrong direction or the thread is not pulled through the bobbin tension guide correctly, it can quickly create a tangled mess underneath the fabric. Remove the bobbin and reinstall it according to your machine's instructions.
Bobbin is wound unevenly
A bobbin that is loose, uneven, or overfilled may not feed smoothly. Wind a new bobbin evenly and make sure it is not filled beyond the recommended level.
Upper thread is not threaded correctly
Bobbin tangles are not always caused by the bobbin. Incorrect upper threading can create loose loops underneath the fabric that look like a bobbin problem. Completely rethread the upper thread and make sure it is seated correctly in the tension discs.
Thread tension is incorrect
If the upper thread tension is too loose, excess thread can collect underneath the fabric and create tangles. Check the tension setting and test on a scrap piece of fabric.
Bobbin area needs cleaning
Lint, loose thread, and small pieces of broken thread can interfere with the bobbin and hook area. Turn off the machine and clean the bobbin area according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Bobbin thread is catching
Make sure the bobbin spins freely and that the thread is not catching on the bobbin case or another rough spot. A damaged bobbin or bobbin case can also cause feeding problems.
Needle problems
A bent, damaged, or incorrectly installed needle can prevent the upper thread from forming the stitch correctly, resulting in tangling underneath. Replace the needle if necessary.
Best tip: Remove the tangled thread completely, clean the bobbin area, reinstall a properly wound bobbin, and completely rethread the upper thread before stitching again. Test on scrap fabric first.
