Why is my embroidery design not stitching correctly?
The most common reasons an embroidery design is not stitching correctly are incorrect hooping, inadequate stabilizer, thread or needle problems, incorrect machine settings, or an issue with the embroidery file or design.
Fabric is moving
If the fabric or stabilizer shifts during stitching, the design can become distorted, misaligned, or uneven. Make sure everything is securely hooped and properly supported.
Not enough stabilizer
Stabilizer helps keep the fabric stable while the design stitches. Lightweight, stretchy, or difficult fabrics may need additional stabilization to prevent movement and distortion.
Needle is damaged or incorrect
A bent, dull, or incorrect needle can cause skipped stitches, thread breaks, and poor stitch formation. Replace the needle with a new embroidery needle suitable for your fabric and thread.
Thread is not feeding correctly
Thread that catches, breaks, or does not pass correctly through the thread guides can cause the design to stitch poorly. Completely rethread the machine and check the entire thread path for anything that may be catching the thread.
Thread tension is incorrect
Incorrect tension can cause loose stitches, loops, bobbin thread showing on top, or uneven coverage. Check the upper-thread tension and test the design on scrap fabric.
Design is too large or too small
Embroidery designs are created for specific sizes. Resizing a design too much can affect stitch spacing and coverage and may cause the design to stitch poorly.
Wrong file format or file conversion
Your embroidery machine needs a file format it can read correctly. Converting a design between formats can sometimes change stitch information, colors, or other details. Whenever possible, use the original format made for your machine.
Machine settings or hoop problems
Make sure the correct hoop size is selected on the machine and that the hoop is properly attached. An incorrect hoop setting can cause placement or stitching problems.
The design may have a digitizing problem
If your machine stitches other designs correctly but one particular design consistently has the same problem, the embroidery file itself may need to be checked. Look at the design preview and compare it with the actual stitch-out.
Best tip: First test another known-good embroidery design. If it stitches correctly, check the problem file, its size, format, and design settings. If every design is having problems, focus on the needle, threading, tension, hooping, stabilizer, and machine settings.
