Why is my embroidery design off center?
The most common reasons an embroidery design is off center are incorrect hoop placement, inaccurate fabric marking, improper hooping, fabric movement, or incorrect design positioning on the embroidery machine.
Design was not positioned correctly
Before stitching, check the design placement on your machine's screen and use the machine's positioning or trace function if available. This helps confirm where the design will stitch.
Fabric was marked incorrectly
If you are placing a design in the center of a shirt, towel, or other project, inaccurate markings can make the finished embroidery look off center. Measure carefully and mark the center of both the fabric and design area.
Hooping is not centered
Make sure the fabric and stabilizer are positioned correctly in the hoop. The center markings on the hoop should line up with your fabric markings.
Fabric moved in the hoop
If the fabric or stabilizer shifts during embroidery, the design may finish in a different position than where it started. Make sure everything is secure and the hoop is properly tightened.
Hoop is not attached correctly
A hoop that is not fully locked into the embroidery machine can move during stitching. Check that the hoop is securely attached before starting the design.
Design was resized or repositioned
If you changed the size or position of the design on the machine, the center point may have changed. Double-check the design's position before stitching.
Multiple hooping was not aligned
If the design requires more than one hooping, even a small placement error between hoopings can make the finished design appear off center. Use alignment marks and the machine's positioning features whenever possible.
Fabric is stretchy or difficult to stabilize
Stretchy fabrics can move or distort while being embroidered, making a correctly positioned design appear off center after stitching. Use appropriate stabilization and avoid stretching the fabric while hooping.
Best tip: Always mark the center of your embroidery area, line it up with the center markings on your hoop, and use the machine's trace function before stitching. This can prevent many placement problems before they happen.
