Why is my embroidery file showing the wrong size?

The most common reasons an embroidery file shows the wrong size are incorrect file information, file conversion, resizing, different software or machine measurements, or confusing the design size with the hoop size.

The File Was Converted

Converting an embroidery design from one format to another can sometimes change how the size is displayed. The actual design may still be correct, but the machine or software may interpret the file information differently.

The Design Was Resized

If the design was resized before saving, the dimensions stored in the embroidery file will reflect the new size. Always check the design dimensions after resizing.

Your Machine Uses Different Measurements

Some embroidery machines or software display measurements in inches, while others use millimeters. For example, a design listed as 100 mm wide is approximately 3.94 inches wide.

The Display Includes the Design's Full Sewing Area

Some machines or embroidery programs may display the overall design area or bounding box rather than the exact visible stitching. This can make the design appear slightly larger than expected.

The Wrong File Was Selected

If several sizes or versions of a design are included in your download, make sure you are opening the correct file. Check the file name and dimensions before transferring it to your machine.

The File Was Saved Incorrectly

If the design dimensions look very different from the original, the file may have been altered or saved incorrectly during conversion or editing. Compare it with the original file whenever possible.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Check whether the measurement is in inches or millimeters.
  • Confirm you are using the correct design file.
  • Check whether the design was resized.
  • Compare the converted file with the original.
  • Check the dimensions in your embroidery software.
  • Make sure you are not confusing the hoop size with the actual design size.

Best Tip

If the design dimensions are different from what you expected, compare the file with the original design before stitching. Avoid unnecessary conversion or resizing, especially if you need the design to remain at its original size.
