Why is my embroidery machine making a knocking noise?

The most common reasons an embroidery machine makes a knocking noise are a needle hitting something, a loose hoop, tangled thread, a problem in the bobbin area, or an issue with the machine's moving parts.

The Needle Is Hitting Something

A knocking sound can happen when the needle hits the hoop, needle plate, presser foot, or another part of the machine. Stop the machine and check the needle and surrounding area before continuing.

The Hoop Is Loose

If the embroidery hoop is not attached securely, it can move while the machine is stitching and make a knocking sound. Remove and reattach the hoop, making sure it is properly locked into place.

The Needle Is Bent or Damaged

A bent needle can move incorrectly and hit parts of the machine as it stitches. Replace the needle with a new one and make sure it is installed correctly.

Thread Is Tangled

Thread can become caught around the needle, bobbin, or hook area and interfere with the machine's movement. Stop the machine and carefully remove any tangled or trapped thread.

There Is a Bobbin Problem

An incorrectly installed bobbin, poorly wound bobbin, or thread buildup around the bobbin area can cause unusual knocking sounds. Remove the bobbin and check that everything is clean and properly installed.

The Design Is Very Dense

A design with many stitches packed closely together can put additional stress on the needle and machine. This can be more noticeable if the design has been resized smaller.

The Machine Needs Cleaning

Lint and loose thread can build up around the bobbin and hook area and interfere with normal movement. Clean the machine according to the manufacturer's instructions.

The Machine May Need Servicing

If the knocking continues after checking the needle, hoop, thread, and bobbin area, there may be a mechanical problem. Stop using the machine and have it inspected according to the manufacturer's service recommendations.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Stop the machine and check the needle.
  • Replace a bent or damaged needle.
  • Make sure the hoop is securely attached.
  • Check for tangled or trapped thread.
  • Remove and reinstall the bobbin.
  • Inspect the bobbin and hook area for lint or thread buildup.
  • Check whether the noise happens with every design or only one.
  • If the knocking continues, stop stitching and have the machine inspected.

Best Tip

If the knocking starts suddenly, stop the machine instead of continuing to stitch. Check for a simple problem such as a bent needle, loose hoop, or tangled thread first. If you cannot find the cause, have the machine checked before continuing.
