Why is my embroidery machine not stitching?
The most common reasons an embroidery machine is not stitching are an incorrectly installed needle, incorrect threading, a bobbin problem, an improperly attached hoop, a machine error, or a problem with the embroidery file.
Check the Needle
A bent, damaged, or incorrectly installed needle can prevent the machine from forming stitches. Replace the needle with a new one and make sure it is installed correctly.
Rethread the Machine
If the upper thread has come out of the thread path or missed a guide, the machine may not stitch correctly. Completely rethread the machine and make sure the thread is feeding smoothly.
Check the Bobbin
Make sure the bobbin is installed in the correct direction, properly seated, and has enough thread. A bobbin that is empty, incorrectly inserted, or tangled can stop the machine from forming stitches.
Check the Hoop
Make sure the embroidery hoop is securely attached to the embroidery unit. If the hoop is not attached correctly, some machines will not start stitching.
Check the Machine Screen
Look for an error message or warning on the machine. The machine may be waiting for you to correct something before it will begin stitching.
Check the Embroidery File
If the machine works with other designs but will not stitch one particular design, the file may be the problem. Make sure the file format is compatible with your machine and that the design fits the selected hoop.
Check the Thread Path
Thread that is caught, tangled, or broken can prevent proper stitching. Check from the spool all the way to the needle and make sure nothing is restricting the thread.
The Machine May Need Service
If the machine will not stitch with any design after checking the needle, threading, bobbin, hoop, and settings, there may be a mechanical or timing problem. In that case, the machine may need professional service.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Replace the needle.
- Rethread the upper thread completely.
- Remove and reinstall the bobbin.
- Make sure the bobbin has enough thread.
- Check that the hoop is securely attached.
- Look for an error message on the screen.
- Try another embroidery design.
- Make sure the design format and hoop size are compatible.
- If the machine still will not stitch, have it inspected.
Best Tip
Start with the simple things first: replace the needle, rethread the machine, check the bobbin, and reattach the hoop. If the machine still will not stitch with a different design, it may be time to have the machine checked.
