Why is my FSL design missing stitches?

The most common reasons a free-standing lace (FSL) design is missing stitches are thread breaks, skipped stitches, an incorrectly installed needle, fabric or stabilizer movement, file conversion problems, or an issue with the embroidery file.

Thread Broke During Stitching

A thread break can leave an area of the FSL design unfinished. Check the design carefully after stitching for gaps or sections where the thread did not sew.

The Machine Skipped Stitches

A damaged needle, incorrect threading, excessive speed, or thread tension problems can cause the machine to skip stitches. Replace the needle and check the threading if skipped stitches continue.

The Stabilizer Moved

FSL needs strong, firmly hooped water-soluble stabilizer. If it moves during stitching, stitches may not land where they are supposed to, creating gaps or missing sections.

The Needle Is Damaged

A bent, dull, or damaged needle can cause skipped stitches and prevent the thread from forming properly. Replacing the needle is a good first troubleshooting step.

The File Was Converted

Converting an embroidery design from one file format to another can sometimes change or remove stitch information. Whenever possible, use the original file format created for your machine.

The Design Was Resized

Significant resizing can change stitch density and spacing. Small details may become too close together or too far apart, which can affect how the FSL design stitches.

There May Be a Problem With the Embroidery File

If the same stitches are missing in the same location every time you stitch the design, the file itself may have missing stitches or another digitizing issue.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Check for thread breaks.
  • Replace a damaged or worn needle.
  • Check upper threading and bobbin installation.
  • Use strong water-soluble stabilizer.
  • Make sure the stabilizer is firmly hooped.
  • Avoid significant resizing.
  • Use the original embroidery file when possible.
  • Check whether the same stitches are missing every time.

Best Tip

If stitches are missing in different places each time, look at your needle, thread, stabilizer, and machine settings first. If the exact same stitches are missing every time, the embroidery file is more likely to be the problem.
