Why is my top thread showing underneath?

The most common reasons your top thread is showing on the back of your embroidery are incorrect thread tension, incorrect threading, bobbin problems, or a needle issue. Here’s how to fix each one:

Upper thread tension is too loose
If the upper thread is too loose, it may be pulled underneath the fabric instead of staying balanced on top. Increase the upper thread tension slightly and test the design.

Machine is threaded incorrectly
Make sure the upper thread passes through every thread guide and the tension discs correctly. Re-thread the machine with the presser foot raised if your machine requires it.

Bobbin tension is too tight
If the bobbin tension is too tight, it can pull the top thread toward the back of the fabric. Check the bobbin installation and tension before making major adjustments.

Bobbin is inserted incorrectly
Make sure the bobbin is installed in the correct direction and that the thread is properly seated in the bobbin tension path.

Needle problem
A dull, bent, or incorrect needle can prevent the threads from forming properly. Replace it with a sharp embroidery needle appropriate for your fabric and thread.

Thread or bobbin problems
Use good-quality embroidery thread and a suitable bobbin thread. Make sure neither thread is damaged, tangled, or catching as it feeds.

Design is very dense
Dense areas of embroidery can sometimes pull more thread toward the back. If the problem occurs only in certain heavily stitched areas, the design's stitch density may be contributing to the issue.

Best tip: Check the upper-thread tension and re-thread the machine first. These are two of the most common and easiest causes to correct before adjusting bobbin tension.
