Why won't my embroidery file open?
The most common reasons an embroidery file will not open are an unsupported file format, a corrupted download, incompatible embroidery software, a damaged file, or trying to open the file directly instead of extracting the ZIP folder first.
The ZIP File Was Not Extracted
If you downloaded a ZIP file, you may need to extract it before opening the embroidery files inside. Your computer may not be able to open the embroidery file directly from the ZIP folder.
You Are Using the Wrong File Format
Embroidery files are made for specific machine formats. Make sure your embroidery software or machine supports the format you are trying to open, such as PES, JEF, DST, EXP, HUS, PEC, VIP, VP3, or XXX.
The File Was Downloaded Incorrectly
A damaged or incomplete download can prevent an embroidery file from opening. Try downloading the ZIP file again and extracting the files again.
Your Software Does Not Support the Format
Not every embroidery program can open every embroidery format. If your software does not support the file type, try opening the design with compatible embroidery software.
The File Was Converted
If the file was converted from another embroidery format, the conversion may have created a file that your software or machine cannot read correctly. When possible, use the original format provided for your machine.
The File Extension Was Changed
Do not simply rename a file extension to another format. Changing a filename from something like .PES to .JEF does not actually convert the embroidery design and can make the file unusable.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Extract the ZIP file before opening the embroidery files.
- Check that you are using the correct embroidery format.
- Make sure your software supports that format.
- Download the ZIP file again if it may be corrupted.
- Avoid unnecessary file conversion.
- Never change the file extension manually to create another format.
Best Tip
If you downloaded an embroidery design as a ZIP file, extract the ZIP first and then open the file format that matches your embroidery machine or software. If only one file will not open while other files work normally, try downloading that design again.
