Why won't my embroidery machine read my design?

The most common reasons an embroidery machine will not read a design are an incompatible file format, an incorrect file saved to the USB drive or machine, a damaged file, an unsupported design size, or a problem with the USB drive or memory card.

Wrong File Format

Embroidery machines only recognize certain file formats. For example, a machine may require PES, JEF, DST, EXP, HUS, or another specific format. Make sure you are using the format designed for your machine.

The File Is Not Saved Correctly

Check that the actual embroidery file is saved to your USB drive or other storage device. Avoid placing the design inside folders if your machine has trouble finding files.

The File Is Damaged

A corrupted or incomplete file may appear on the computer but fail to open on the embroidery machine. Try downloading or copying the file again.

The Design Is Too Large

Your machine may not display a design if it is larger than the embroidery area supported by the selected hoop. Check the design dimensions and your machine's maximum embroidery size.

The File Was Converted

Converting an embroidery design from one format to another can sometimes create compatibility problems. Whenever possible, use the original file format intended for your machine.

The USB Drive or Memory Card Has a Problem

Some embroidery machines work better with smaller, compatible USB drives or memory cards. If the machine cannot see any designs, try another compatible storage device.

The File Name Causes a Problem

Some older embroidery machines have restrictions on file names or folder structures. If your machine does not recognize the design, try using a short, simple file name with no unusual characters.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Confirm you are using the correct file format.
  • Check that the design is within your machine's embroidery area.
  • Copy the file to the USB drive again.
  • Try a different compatible USB drive.
  • Use a short, simple file name.
  • Avoid unnecessary file conversion.
  • Check that the design is not inside an unsupported folder.

Best Tip

First check the file format and design size. If the machine reads other embroidery designs but will not read one particular file, the problem is usually with that file, its format, or its compatibility with your machine.
