Why won't my embroidery machine recognize my PES file?

The most common reasons an embroidery machine will not recognize a PES file are that the machine does not support that PES version, the file is damaged, the design is too large, the file is saved incorrectly, or the machine cannot read the USB drive.

Your Machine Does Not Support That PES Version

PES is commonly associated with Brother and Baby Lock machines, but different machines may support different PES versions. Check your machine's manual to see which PES format and design size it supports.

The File Is Damaged

A corrupted or incomplete download may prevent the machine from recognizing the design. Try downloading the design again and transferring the new file.

The Design Is Too Large

Your machine may not recognize a PES design that exceeds its maximum embroidery area. Check the design dimensions and make sure they fit the hoop supported by your machine.

The File Is Still Inside the ZIP Folder

If you downloaded the design as a ZIP file, extract the ZIP folder first. Your machine needs the actual PES file, not the ZIP file.

The File Is Saved Incorrectly

Make sure the PES file is copied directly to a location your machine can read. Some machines have limitations on folders, file names, or the number of files stored on a USB drive.

The USB Drive Is Not Compatible

If your machine does not recognize any designs, the problem may be the USB drive rather than the PES file. Try a compatible USB drive that has been formatted according to your machine's instructions.

The File Was Converted

If the PES file was created by converting another embroidery format, the conversion may have produced a file that your machine does not recognize correctly. Whenever possible, use the original PES file.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

  • Confirm your machine supports PES files.
  • Check which PES version your machine supports.
  • Extract the ZIP file before transferring the design.
  • Check that the design fits your hoop.
  • Try downloading the file again.
  • Use a compatible USB drive.
  • Try a different PES design to determine whether the problem is the file or the machine.

Best Tip

If your machine recognizes other PES files but not one particular design, download that design again and check its size and PES compatibility. If it still will not recognize the file, the file itself may be the problem.
