Can a Regular Sewing Machine Do Embroidery?
A regular sewing machine can do embroidery only by hand-guided stitching, where you move the fabric yourself. It cannot stitch a digital embroidery design. For that, you need an embroidery machine.
The difference is in what moves. On an embroidery machine, the hoop moves automatically under the needle, following the instructions in a design file. On a regular sewing machine, nothing moves the fabric into a pattern except you.
What a regular sewing machine can do
- Free-motion embroidery. You lower the feed dogs, fit a darning or free-motion foot, hoop the fabric and steer it by hand while the needle runs. It works like drawing with thread, and it takes practice.
- Decorative stitches. Many machines have built-in patterns such as scallops, vines and small motifs that stitch in a straight line.
- Simple lettering. Some computerized sewing machines can stitch small letters in a row.
What a regular sewing machine cannot do
- Read embroidery files such as PES, JEF or DST.
- Stitch a downloaded design, such as an animal, a logo or an applique.
- Change position on its own to fill in shapes.
What you need for digital designs
To stitch downloaded embroidery designs, you need either an embroidery-only machine or a sewing and embroidery combination machine. A combination machine sews like a regular machine and switches to embroidery when you attach its embroidery unit and hoop.
If you are not sure which kind you have, look for an embroidery unit, an embroidery hoop and a USB port or wireless connection for loading designs. A machine without those is a regular sewing machine.
