What Is DST Format in Machine Embroidery?

DST format in machine embroidery is the file type created by Tajima for commercial embroidery machines. A DST file ends in .dst and tells the machine exactly where to place each stitch.

DST is the most widely supported embroidery format. Commercial multi-needle machines use it as standard, and many home embroidery machines can read it too.

A DST file is a set of instructions, not a picture. It holds:

  • the position of every stitch
  • where the machine should jump and trim
  • where the machine should stop for a color change

A DST file does not store thread colors. It only records where each color change happens. This is why a DST design often appears in strange colors on your machine's screen or in software. The design is fine. Follow the color chart that came with it and thread each color in order.

If your machine has its own format, such as PES for Brother or JEF for Janome, use that one first, because it carries the color information. Choose DST when you have a commercial machine or when your machine's own format isn't included.
