What Is EXP Format in Machine Embroidery?

EXP format in machine embroidery is the file type created by Melco for commercial embroidery machines, and it is also read by many Bernina machines. An EXP file ends in .exp and tells the machine exactly where to place each stitch.

An EXP file is a set of instructions, not a picture. It holds:

  • the position of every stitch
  • where the machine should jump and trim
  • where the machine should stop for a color change

Like DST, an EXP file does not store thread colors. It only records where each color change happens, so the design may appear in unexpected colors on your machine's screen. The design is fine. Follow the color chart that came with it and thread each color in order.

EXP is the format most Bernina owners use for purchased designs. Bernina's own format, ART, can only be created in Bernina software, so most design shops don't offer it. If you have a Bernina and a download doesn't include ART, choose the EXP file.

EXP is one of several machine embroidery formats. Each machine brand reads its own, such as PES for Brother and Baby Lock and JEF for Janome. Most embroidery designs are sold with several formats in one download, so you pick the file that matches your machine.
